This map of Australia shows how the land surface temperature from January 25 to February 1 compared to the average mid-summer temperatures the continent experienced between 2000-2008. Places where temperatures were warmer than average are red, places experiencing near-normal temperatures are white, and places where temperatures were cooler than average are blue. The data were collected by the MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite.

In the hungarian cartographical tradition "The mud map" is the map of Carpathian basin represented before the control of the Tisza River (ended in 1880). The Aussie Mud Map look like this.

Our First Self Printed Map

This is an offtopic. Or not. This small Ptolemaios doesn't represent Australia. But we are mapmakers, and from this day real mapmakers. We got the chance to print a map on a handmade paper, with a copper engraved plate (made by our professor Dr. Zsolt Török) using a 500 year old technology. We made everything, from spreading the paint on the copper plate, to the use of the printing machine. It was something real special! We saw the birth of the map!

Cornelis de Jode (1568 -1600) published this map, who was Gerhard de Jode cartographer's son. The map depicts Australia with a big probability. And we are still before 1606. Many reason that it was the Portuguese who landed in 1606. The name of the map: Novae Guineae Forma&Situs. The map was part of the Speculum Orbis Terrarum.

Heinrich Bunting (1545-1606) made this map. The West Coast of right lower Australia which can be recognized in a heel quite well. He has an impish world map yet, a little parts from Brasil shows there, but back the Portugueses should not know it. And the first European was putting in his foot in 1606 official onto the continent, Dutch Willem Janszoon.
